I will never understand the vitriolic hate for Alicent. It’s very uneasy to read online, especially as a lot of this hate started before the 10 year timeskip, where she gets a little bolder.

She’s a victim in every sense, married off as a child, going through marital rape, forced to bear children, once she was queen she said she had no allies except for her father (a terrible ally) and Rheanyra. But when she vouched for Rheanyra, she believed she had caused her father’s exile, and when she learns she was lied to, she can no longer trust her best friend. Suddenly, no allies left. She’s married to a rotting man, forced to bear his children, and spent the early years of their marriage quiet and subdued. Alone.

Post time-skip this changes a lot. She’s made new allies, a man who shares her disdain for Rheanyra, and an intelligent man who appears to have her interest in mind. She’s bolder with Viserys now, clearly more confident in her role and aware of his physical and emotional weaknesses. It’s not very nice, but she’s clawing back some control. She’s a very human character and fascinating. I have buckets of sympathy for her. She’s flawed, she can be nasty, she’s a hypocrit, she’s a great character.

The hate she gets is utterly disproportionate.

Frankly, we’re watching a GoT series, no one here is thoroughly good, they are all very flawed and complex, please just enjoy yourselves instead.

Jonathan Larson essentially being like, “yeah life absolutely sucks, aging is terrifying and we all feel like we’re running out of time” but then singing that “at least you’re not alone, your friends are there too” is oddly comforting.

Because life does suck and it is terrifying. But having friends who understand you, who are going through the same things as you and who love you even in your bad moments all make it just a little bit easier to get through and sometimes a little bit easier is enough to make you want to push through all the bad shit.
